Cleaning your oven may be one of those jobs that you put off for weeks, months, or even years, but, a clean oven will ensure your cooking environment is hygienic and you don’t get funny smells from burnt-on grease.
Ovens accumulate grease, spilt foods and food particles – it’s an inevitability. However, the amount of food spillage and grease that’s accumulated really depends on the individuals using the oven, what they’re cooking and how often they use the oven. This makes putting a time frame on cleaning your oven quite difficult, because some ovens may be used more frequently than others, whilst different foods are used as well. It is typically recommended that ovens are cleaned every 12 weeks or whenever homeowners notice stains of burnt-on food.
Many opt to use chemical solutions when cleaning these appliances, however, two cleaning experts have shared how Britons can use baking soda to “effectively” remove any stubborn build up of grease and grime in ovens.
Chris Wootton, Managing Director of domestic cleaning business, Poppies, also recommended using baking soda to clean ovens. However, he advised combining it with washing up liquid rather than white vinegar.
The cleaning pro first instructed that homeowners remove as much dirt as they can with a dry scrub brush and vacuum cleaner.
He said: “Remove all the racks inside the oven and proceed to gather the loose crumbs into a corner, then proceed to vacuum the lose debris up.
“You can also use a wallpaper scraper or similar on an enamel oven to scrape off much of the debris and grease.”
The next task is to make the cleaning paste out of baking soda and washing up liquid. Chris said: “Next, make a baking soda paste (three parts baking soda, one part water), but also add a squirt of washing up liquid into the mix.
“Proceed to apply the paste to every nook and cranny in the oven – and don’t forget the oven door. The thicker the layer of paste, the better, so if you need to make a second batch, repeat the first step.”
While the paste is sitting and soaking up all of the grease and grime from the oven, now is a great time to run the oven racks a bath, according to the expert.
He said: “Lay an old towel down in the bathtub, place the racks on top and run a very hot bath with about half a cup of dish soap.
“Leave everything overnight to ensure you loosen all the grease and grime, then the next morning, scrub and dry the racks.”
However, before placing the racks back in the oven, rub the baking soda paste with a wet sponge. Chris commented: “You will certainly be surprised by how much invisible grime has built up inside the oven.”
Finally, take a clean, damp microfibre cloth to pick up any remaining grime or paste. Once homeowners have wiped thoroughly, let the inside of the oven air dry for 15 to 20 minutes to deodorise, then proceed to lay the oven racks back inside.
